El DORADO TOURIST PARK - IDEALLY
PLACED FOR YOUR NEXT HOLIDAY
The El Dorado Tourist Park is ideally placed to be your
base for that holiday you have been promising yourself.
When I was a child, growing up in Melbourne, Geelong was a
long way away and a trip there involved planning and packed lunches. Now,
with the opening of the new freeway, it is 45 minutes from the CBD and
the perfect place for a short or long break holiday.
Geelong is the second largest city in Victoria and has a
wonderful combination of new and old. There are some historic buildings
from the 1800’s, plus stunning new developments, particularly at
Waterfront Geelong. But nature plays a major part in the area too. The
Moorabool valley has grown into a wine region due to some innovative wine
makers who have taken on the challenge of producing varieties grown on a
limestone and basalt base. And who can forget that it is a jumping off
point for the Bellarine Peninsular and the world famous Great Ocean Road.
The El Dorado Tourist Park is ideally placed to be your
base for that holiday you have been promising yourself. The McIvor family
of Dave, Aileen and their four children Michael, Matthew, Sarah and
Jenny, are all hands on with their park and have a two generational view
on what you want. Because of this the park provides a superb place for
all types of holidays.
While Dave has been working on preserving and drought
proofing the grounds, Michael has been working on entertaining the
growing number of families who want to come to Geelong so a jumping
pillow and bike hire has been added. If you do not want to bring your
caravan then there are two and three bedroom cabins for you to choose
from. If you bring your caravan, then you will be sure of an en-suite
site, because that is all they have.
Geelong is so much closer to everything these days but
still gives you the ability to have city conveniences and country
hospitality. Why not join the McIvor family at their park and find out
what the area has to offer.

EMU BEACH HOLIDAY PARK - ALBANY ROCKS
Alison Huth visits historical Albany.
I have always wanted to get to Albany to have a look at the history of
the area, and I was not disappointed. Our first stop was to check in to
the Emu Beach Holiday Park, which was an excellent choice. The park is
just beautiful, with flowers galore particularly the magnificent roses,
and some lovely feature gardens with statues scattered throughout the
park.
I was also taken with the BBQ area, which is a modern
‘classical masterpiece’ and worth the trip to see alone. If you are
taking the children or grandchildren then there is plenty to keep them
busy, a jumping pillow, playground, mini golf and an indoor games room
for those who are harder to entertain. One of the highlights of the park
is the two easy access points onto the beach, just 30 metres away.
Once you are settled in, then it is worth taking the time
to find out where to go and what to see. There is plenty of help and
information in the office so you can work out where you want to go. We
had a couple of important ‘musts’ one of which was the old Whaling
Station, which is now a museum called Albany’s Whale World. This gives a
good history of the whaling industry, and you get a chance to go over a
whaling ship and see a 3D whaling movie. The skeleton of a Pygmy Blue
Whale gives you an idea of the size of these magnificent mammals.
The Albany Historic Tourist Drive takes you around some of
the older areas and houses of the township, and there are some very fine
ones too. There were so many other things we found to do, but we simply
ran out of time, which means a return trip another day.
Our stay at the park was really enjoyable, and I was very
impressed with the facilities available to caravan clubs. There is a
conference room that they can use if they are staying for a few days,
which gives the club members the space for their own socializing. One
thing that did really appeal to me was the tyre wall, what a great
environmentally friendly way to manage old tyres.
When you come to Albany and stay at Emu Beach Holiday
Park, you really do need to allow plenty of time to stop and smell their
roses.

GOONDIWINDI TOP TOURIST PARK
Goondiwindi has it all.
When you are heading up north in Queensland there is one
town that is hard to miss because it has 6 highways going in and out of
it. Goondiwindi is a cotton town and an excellent spot to spend a day or
two on your travels.
Ged and Marianne McKenna have been at Goondiwindi Top
Tourist Park since September 2007 and have made it their own. There are
plenty of huge drive through sites, and a few en-suites too. But it is
the extras that Ged and Marianne put on during the winter season (May to
September) that make it hard to leave.
On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights it is fish BBQ
night around the camp fire, and I can tell you that the food is great.
The Mari Mari is cooked to perfection and matched perfectly by the
coleslaw and herbed potatoes. The receipt for the self saucing chocolate
pudding must have come from my Gran’s cook book!
On Tuesday you might be entertained by a local band, but
the other nights you have the pleasure of talking to other travellers and
meeting new friends. If you are lucky and the possums are hungry they
will come when Ged calls them for a nibble of bread and one or two are
tame enough to pat.
I made the acquaintance of one young mum, with a baby in
her pouch, who was happy enough to be stroked, under strict supervision
of Ged. I did not realise how soft her fur was, and on a closer look just
how big her claws were! No wonder they sound like hob nailed boots on my
tin roof.
Come Sunday morning it is pancake time with all the
trimmings, a great breakfast by the glorious billabong which is a feature
of the park.
Staying at this park is not just about eating, there is
plenty to do in Goodniwindi too. You can take a group tour to find out
about the whole cotton story from farm to outlet, there is fishing, water
sports, bird watching and how can you forget Gunsynd – the “Goondiwindi
Grey”. This famous son was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of
Fame in 2005 and a museum was opened to Gunsynd in Goondiwindi by his
last remaining owner, Bill Bishop, in 2007.
Goondiwindi has it all, and a great park to stay in.

PROM COUNTRY CHALLENGE - STAY AT TOORA TOURIST PARK
Annual
run - Sunday 16 August 2009 - Toora, Victoria, Australia
www.promcountrychallenge.org.au
Toora is a small historic town which is only a 2 hours,
very picturesque, drive from Melbourne. On a day in August each year this
tiny town is host to a magnificent fun run and challenge event. The 30km
challenge is a run up Mt Best and back into the town of Toora. It is
an amazing course incorporating undulating hills, a 400m
winding climb to Mt Best and panoramic views and stunning
countryside. It is a great test of strength and endurance If
this is not to your fancy you could try the 6km walk for
fun, 4 x 6km relay run or the 6 km run around the historic
township of Toora and surrounds. Make a weekend of it and book into the 4
start Toora Tourist Park which has an indoor heated pool and spa, jumping
pillow, trampoline, playground, tennis court and much more. Most importantly
it is a short walk into the town of Toora where the race starts and also
where you can grab a great old fashioned country pub meal at the local
pub.
Wilsons Prom Open For Business
Arguably Victoria's favourite National Park, Wilsons Promontory, is
now open for business. After the terrible fires in February Wilsons
Promontory National Park reopened the gates to visitors on March 21st.
Early on the morning of Sunday 8 February 2009, the day after the
infamous Black Saturday, a dry lightning storm passed over Wilsons
Promontory and a bushfire ignited. This bushfire, called the Cathedral
fire, burnt 25,200ha over five weeks, close to 50% of the national park.
Today, the Cathedral fire is part of your Prom experience. After
the recent rains you can see regrowth happening and the Prom is now a
multi coloured fascination. Toora Tourist Park is a 30 minute drive from
the park entrance and is offering three fantastic specials to give you an
opportunity to come and visit the Prom to witness this unique experience.
Toora Tourist Park is a 4 star park with luxury en suite cabins, ensuite
powered sites, powered sites, indoor pool and spa heated all year round,
jumping pillow, tennis court, games room, trampoline, camp kitchen,
recreation room, free BBQs and much more.

Melbourne and my Platinum Card
Peter and I decided to take a short break in Melbourne in early March,
and I made sure that I packed my Platinum Card. I checked out the special
offers in the Platinum Membership booklet before we left and off we went.
Melbourne is a wonderful city to visit and we caught it at
a superb time. It is many years since I lived there and I have fond
memories of the fun of Moomba, and I am glad to say that Moomba is very
much back on the scene, with some spectacular fireworks each night of the
three day event.
We also like to try a range of interesting food, and the
card came in very handy then as it appeared for a couple of diners and
one lunch. The Platinum Card led us to the Gurkha’s Express, a Nepalese
Restaurant which has a superb menu. Now, goat may not be high on your
list of favourites, but it was exceptionally tasty.
We also wanted to have a good look at the whole city so
headed off to the Rialto building and the 360 degree viewing floor. The
views were just superb, and the discount from our platinum card made it
just that much better. There are a couple of outdoor viewing areas, but
as you can imagine they are well fenced to make sure you cannot fall!
There are free fixed huge binoculars all around the indoor viewing area
which make it so much easier to spot things you really want to see.
With just a few outings, my Platinum Card has already paid
for itself through the discounts that I have received, and I have nearly
two years left to go. I like being able to get my normal discount when I
stay at a Top Tourist Park, plus the special discounts at any time. As
they say – Bargain!
You can sign up for a Platinum Card, which costs $70 for
two years and includes your normal discounts when you stay at a Top
Tourist Park, when you re-new your membership, join at one of the
participating member parks or go on line at:
www.toptouristparks.com.au
It’s a great way to add to your travel and time at home.
